I moved to Prague, Czech Republic from Kazakhstan in 2017 to pursue my studies, and I continue to live in this city to this day. Volunteering has always been a significant passion of mine since childhood, and upon moving to Prague, I was fortunate to engage in volunteering with various NGOs. One of the first organizations I joined as a volunteer was OPU in 2020.

I first learned about OPU from a classmate at Anglo American University back then. She informed me about the opportunity to participate in field trips to the centers where refugees await decisions regarding their refugee status in the Czech Republic. I promptly contacted OPU and scheduled an appointment with one of the main coordinators, Pavla Merhautova, who kindly explained the mission of OPU and the activities it offers.

Upon officially becoming an OPU volunteer, I was assigned to my first field trips. I vividly

remember my initial experience in Hradec Kralove, where I was part of the OPU team that conducted a workshop on refugees’ employment rights in the Czech Republic, creating CVs for Czech recruiters, and interview preparation. All the participants in this workshop were Russian speakers, which allowed me to engage in meaningful conversations with each of them and hear their stories. Notably, I met two Kazakh women fleeing from my home country, both with families and more than one child. This part of the trip was particularly emotional for me, given my connection to Kazakh refugees. I also provided interpretation services for these two women, helping them communicate in Czech and English. I was

profoundly grateful to be of assistance to my fellow countrymen in such a situation.

Subsequently, I participated in numerous other volunteering opportunities with OPU. I visited

many refugee residences and had the pleasure of meeting wonderful people. We organized various activities to facilitate socialization, including games, conversations on various topics, and shared meals. I interacted with people of all ages, hailing from diverse countries and backgrounds. Additionally, I engaged in activities with refugee children, organizing games and spending quality time with them. More recently, I joined a volunteering program for Ukrainian grandmothers, with whom I attended a concert at Rudolfinum and even created aprons together. I cherished the beautiful moments we shared, experiencing their kindness and gratitude.

Now, I’ve been volunteering with OPU for three years. I have had numerous opportunities to

make a positive impact on peoples’ lives and be a source of support for those in need of someone to talk to, share their concerns with, or simply play a game together. OPU is one of the most active and reputable NGOs I’ve had the privilege of volunteering for in Prague, and I intend to remain a part of the OPU family.
